Clinical Program
The clinical program is designed to assure that each resident training in the program has the opportunity to exceed the minimum case number requirements for each category as set by the American Board of Anesthesiology to be eligible for specialty certification by that board. The primary training hospitals are:
Teaching Hospitals
University Hospital
The public hospital district for Bexar County, Texas and San Antonio's only health system recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's Best Hospitals. University Hospital, with more than 600 beds, is a regional Level I Trauma Center and a leader in Organ Transplantation. A full-range of medical services is available at five community clinics, including the renowned Texas Diabetes Institute. The health system provides specialty services such as emergency medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, and rehabilitation.
South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital
Acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, geriatric, and primary care services are offered for veterans residing locally, regionally and nationally. Comprised of 271 operating hospital beds, a 90-bed Extended Care Therapy Center and a 30-bed state-of-the-art Spinal Cord Injury Center, ALMD provides such tertiary care services and technology as bone marrow transplantation, open heart surgery, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. The VA’s Under Secretary for Health honored the STVHCS with operating two clinical Programs of Excellence—Health Care for Homeless Veterans and Cardiac Surgery Program. As a Level II research facility, with a budget of approximately $5.4 million (24 percent VA funded), nearly 40 principal investigators conduct research on aging, cardiac surgery, cancer, diabetes, and more. The facility houses the only National Institutes of Health sponsored research program in the VA and one of 16 Geriatric Research, Education & Clinical Centers, which recently was noted a "Center of Excellence" by the National Institute on Aging.
Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa (CSRCH) is the leading Children’s hospital in all of South Texas. Serving a 90-county area, the hospital is one of only a few Children’s hospitals in Texas and the first hospital in the region entirely dedicated to the care of children. Serving more than 150,000 children each year, CSRCH is a 200-plus bed facility and is the only academic Children’s hospital in San Antonio, partnering with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio while collaborating with private pediatricians to provide comprehensive pediatric services at one location since 1959.
From neonatal intensive care to Children’s emergency services, titanium rib implants, a heart program especially designed for children, respite care and a specialized asthma program, CSRCH continues to provide quality, innovative care specifically designed to meet the unique needs of children.
Clinical Rotations
PGY-1
A transitional year incorporating rotations in the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Anesthesiology.
PGY-2
Twelve months of general operating room experience at the affiliated training hospitals under the direct supervision of the Anesthesiology faculty with increasing degrees of difficulty and a wide variety of surgical cases.
PGY-3 and 4
Twenty-four months of rotation assignments designed to enable the resident the opportunity to spend dedicated time experiencing specific types of sub-specialty anesthesia cases.
Minimum required experience
2 months of Cardio-thoracic anesthesiology
2 months of Neurosurgical anesthesiology
2 months of Pediatric anesthesiology
2 months of Critical Care Medicine
2 months of Obstetric anesthesiology
1 month of Airway management
1 month of Regional anesthesiology
1 month of Perioperative medicine
1 month of Post-anesthesia care
1 month of Chronic pain
1 month of Acute pain
Optional experience opportunities
Elective one month rotation in Pediatric Cardiovascular Anesthesia at Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston, Texas affiliated with the Baylor College of Medicine
Elective one month rotation in Neurosurgical Anesthesia at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas
Additional rotations available in the sub-specialty locations at University Hospital and the STVHCS ALMD hospital.
